Introduction: Jennie Age Six Years.
I am a type 1 diabetic and I am six years old. I got diabetes when I was three years old. I have to take shots at every meal and before I eat anything I have to check my blood sugar. Some of you have diabetes like me I am not the only one with this. Like my buddy Gavin. Most of the time people use different meters like Gavin. He has a meter that is silver and navy blue. My meter is navy blue all over and mine is called One Touch Ultra Meter. Like most people we all have different strips for our meters. Gavin’s strips is octagon and mine is a long rectangle.
Now I want to tell you some tips of diabetes. It really is not that hard. A few of you just got in the hospital because you have been diagnosed with diabetes. The first thing you need to know that moms and dads who have kids that have diabetes don’t make the child feel left out because there is a lot of diabetes in the world.
Now I will tell you the tips for your child. First thing you need to know is when your child first gets diagnosed don’t get to scared or panic like my Dad. You really don’t need to see that. My Dad got sweatier and sweatier with every word my doctor said. So much sweat was running down his face I could barely see his face. Well don’t let that happen, because it is no big deal being a diabetic. All you have to do is follow my lead.
The first thing you need to learn is how to take your blood sugar, and then you have to go to Walgreen's to get your blood sugar equipment. Then when your child says that they feel kind of different, you need to open your equipment pouch and get out an alcohol pad, Then you need to get out your meter. Now take your strips out of the tube, then put the strip in the slot of the meter.
Look on the topside or bottom of the meter for a little slot. When you find that slot you need to put the strip inside the slot. Then your screen on the meter will say eight, eight, eight and then it will say a certain number you have to look on your strip pouch to see if it is the right number. If it is the right number that means you are ok. Now if it is not the same number you need to change the code. The doctor will give you a manual how to learn to change the code. Some people mention things different like they either feel crazy, silly or dizzy.
Now I need to tell you there is a shot called Lantus. It really, really stings but don’t read that part to your child; keep that a promise. If you want to tell them, they have to be six years old or above. Which is kind of crazy I mention that. You got to be really careful when you give them their shots especially Lantus. We will begin on some more tips later.

About Ketones
All you diabetes kids now, I want to tell you about something that you get from unusually high blood sugar. There is something called ketones that most people get every once in awhile. One way that you know when you get ketones is to check it. Now you are probably wondering how you check it. One way to check it is you get urine strips. It has a little pad in the front of the stick that has a little makeup color on it. You have this little toilet hat you use the bathroom in it, and you take that stick and dip it in there. On the bottle there are different colors on the bottle you match up that and if it is purple that means you have very high ketones, and you need to contact your doctor immediately, and if it is tan in color that means you do not have ketones. There is also another way to check it. You know the diabetes meter I was telling you about? Well there is a meter that you can check your ketones with also.
